Improved Access

Southwest Scotland RnR has been able to improve access to the home where injured service personnel come for adventure holidays, thanks to funding from the Dumfries Lions Club, Royal Marine Charities and practical help from 3 Rifles.

Chair, Jennefer Tobin said: “By the kind courtesy of Colonel Nick Kitson DSO, we had excellent help from 3 Rifles. Four lads led by Corporal Champion came down to help build the pathway for safe access to the house. They stayed for three days and did a huge amount of hard work. We are so grateful to the Lions for the funds they provided and to everyone who has helped in this project, which has considerably improved access to the house.”

The first task was digging a two-foot deep trench to sink the water pipe connection to a small outhouse which is the process of being converted into a treatment room supporter where Berni Jeavons provides aromatherapy massage for the lad on holiday.  Jennefer said: “Then, under instruction from Rab Callender, a great supporter of RnR, they laid the pathway brick by brick. Richard Farrish’s electricians laid in the lighting cables.”

Members of Dumfries Lions, including President, Ewan Fraser came to view the completed work recently while 40 Commando Royal Marines were enjoying a week’s RnR.

MP David Mundell who is the permanent under-secretary of state for Scotland also visited the charity and met members of 40 Commando. He said: “Jennefer Tobin is an amazing person who has worked hard to do something to support our troops who have been injured in combat and South West Scotland RnR is an incredible achievement.

“I very much welcomed the opportunity to see the people who have benefitted from her work. It is very important that we don’t just say that we support our troops but that we back it up with action and that is what Jennefer and South West Scotland RnR have done. All those like the Dumfries Lions who have contributed to the project also deserve recognition. The paths which the Lions provided are a very welcome addition and contribute to the homely and welcoming environment provided to the servicemen and women whilst they are taking part in the activities which the RnR provides.”
